I don't know to much about Buell Kazee music but his book faith is the victory is one of the greatest book's in christian literature I have ever read. Any one wants to know the basics of the christian life should read this book. He deserves a reward in heaven for this book.

I, alas, neither have the original liners but, though I can't say for sure, I imagine everything Bruce Jackson wrote in them appears in form or spirit here:

http://www.amazon.com/Wake-Up-Dead-Man-Southern/dp/0820321583

There's a chapter devoted to Smith. It's a very affecting and powerful book.

If anyone's got the LP liners and is willing to scan and send them, I'd love to post them here.

Thanks for your wonderful comments about Mike Seeger. I agree that we can't possibly sum up all the contributions that he made to American roots music. My feelings, though, are probably best summed up by a statement that Hazel Dickens made: "Mike validated my culture." By resurrecting the old songs, and playing and singing them in the styles of the people who made them, he lent a sense of worth and dignity to America's working folk. This was a democratic vision every bit as important as anything his big brother, Pete, ever did.

You've included some great photographs, particularly the one of Mike riding the unicycle. Is there any chance that I could get copies of them for the biography of Mike that I'm preparing?

Sincerely,

Bill Malone

Nathan,

Great to meet you after the panel discussion at Transfigurations. We got to talking about Madison County's legacy of traditional balladry. Joe Penland is the artist whose name I forgot. He's a Madison County native. I recently saw him at the Bluff Mountain Festival in Hot Springs.

Talk soon,

My friend and mentor, Archie Green, was founder, chairman, CEO, treasurer, etc., of Fund for Labor Culture and History, a non-profit corporation with headquarters in Archie's home. If you want to remember Archie in the way he would have wished most, send a tax-deductible contribution to the Fund. For the time being, the best address would be c/o Derek Green, 224 Caselli Ave., San Francisco 94114.

What a great collection of links, thanks.

Your mention of Chinese revolutionary music reminded me of one of my all-time favorite flea market finds. The translated lyrics on the back went: "The boys are running down the mountain, the girls are running after them down the mountain. Why are they running down the mountain? To bring their harvest to the people's collective!"

You may have gotten them all on here already, but the latest issue of the Old-Time Herald has an article listing American collections that are online.
